What is Metronidazole and how does it work?
- Metronidazole belongs to the nitroimidazole antimicrobials class of medicines.
- Antimicrobials called nitroimidazoles are used to treat illnesses caused by bacteria and protozoa.
- The bacteria or other organism that is causing the infection is killed by metronidazole pills.
- This helps to get rid of the infection.
- Metronidazole immediate-release and extended-release tablets are both prescribed medications.
- Both are taken by mouth. Flagyl (immediate-release) and Flagyl ER are the brand names for these pills (extended-release).
- Extended-release medications gradually release their active ingredients into the body.
- Generic medications are available for both immediate-release and extended-release tablets.
- Metronidazole usually begins to work within 1 hour of consumption. However, while using Metronidazole, it may take up to 2-3 days for you to feel better. Consult your doctor if you don't notice a significant improvement in your symptoms.
Uses of Metronidazole:
- Many infections caused by bacteria or parasites are treated with metronidazole immediate-release oral pills.
- Amebiasis and trichomoniasis are examples of illnesses that affect the gastrointestinal tract or reproductive system.
- Women's vaginal infections are treated with metronidazole extended-release oral pills.
- Metronidazole can be used as part of a multi-drug treatment. As a result, you may need to take it in conjunction with other medications.
