What is pioglitazone?

How should I take pioglitazone?

  • Read your medication label carefully and follow all of the advice on it.
  • Pioglitazone is taken with or without food, according to your doctor's recommendations for dose and duration.
  • Along with Pioglitazone, you should continue to exercise regularly, consume a nutritious diet, and take your other diabetic medications.
  • You may feel unusually hungry, dizzy, irritated, confused, anxious, or shaky if you have low blood sugar (hypoglycemia). Eat or drink a fast-acting source of sugar to quickly correct hypoglycemia (hard candy, fruit juice, raisins, crackers, or non-diet soda).
  • If you have severe hypoglycemia, your physician may appoint a glucagon injection kit. In case of an emergency, make sure your family or close friends know how to administer this injection.
  • After a few weeks on Pioglitazone, the full effects may become apparent. Continue to take your medicine as directed by your health care specialist.

Dosage Information of pioglitazone

Pioglitazone comes in the form of Tablet: 15 mg, 30 mg, 45 mg

Adults: Take 15 or 30 milligrams (mg) once a day initially. If necessary, your health care specialist may change your medicine dose. However, the daily intake is usually limited to 45 mg.

For Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus Patients

  • It can be used alone or in combination with insulin or insulin secretagogues.
  • Initially, take 15-30 mg orally with a meal once a day; gradually raise the dose by 15 mg per day, with careful monitoring, to 45 mg per day.
  • ALT levels should be checked at the beginning of treatment, once a month for the first 12 months, and then every three months following that.

Dosage Modification

  • Coadministration with a sulfonylurea (insulin secretagogue): Reduce the amount of insulin secretagogue you're taking.
  • Insulin co-administration: Reduce insulin dosage by 10% to 25%.
  • Strong CYP2C8 inhibitors (gemfibrozil) should not be taken together. The maximum daily dose of pioglitazone should not exceed 15 mg.

  • Take the medicine as soon as possible, but if your next dose is approaching, skip the missed dose. Do not take two doses of the medicine at once.
  • Extreme weakness, sweating, impaired vision, difficulty speaking, stomach ache, tremors, confusion, and seizure are all symptoms of low blood sugar (convulsions).
