Before using Glipizide

  • If you are allergic to glipizide or have diabetic ketoacidosis, you should not use this medication (call your doctor for treatment).
  • If you've ever had liver or renal illness, chronic diarrhea or a blockage in your intestines, or a glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency, tell your doctor (G6PD).
  • If you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant, follow your doctor's instructions for using glipizide.

How should I take glipizide?

Note: If you're taking glipizide 20 mg or less and going from immediate-release to extended-release tablets, your dosage will remain the same. If you take more than 20 mg of immediate-release pills, you will only need 20 mg of extended-release tablets.

Child dosage (ages 0–17 years): A dose that is both safe and effective for youngsters has yet to be determined.

Senior dosage (ages 65 years and older): You could be more sensitive to glipizide, putting you at risk for low blood sugar. Your doctor may prescribe a smaller dose of 2.5 mg once a day to begin with.

Storage of Glipizide:
